Sphynx History

Believe it or not, hairless cats have been around for centuries. But it was until 1960's the Sphynx breed, as we know today was developed into breeding programs and recognized through many cat associations worldwide.

In 1966 a black and white domestic cat gave birth to a hairless kitten named 'Prune'. With a magical touch from Mother Nature it was discovered that the hairless cat was not a defect but a natural mutation. The hairless kitten 'Prune' was then introduced to a healthy breeding program. This was the first sphynx-breeding program that introduced this natural phenomenon into mainstream. The program was very selective with the purpose of creating an original and unique genetic pool for the sphynx breed. It was then that sphynx cats came into existence.

The Sphynx progressed from Europe then around the world where cat breeders bred the Sphynx with normal coated cats and then back to hairless cats realizing the remarkable natural mutations and spontaneous appearance the sphynx carried. Over the progressive years this new breed of hairless cats went through various names to identify their naked appearance. They were called 'The Canadian Hairless', Moonstone Cats, Canadian Sphynx, then finally to just plain 'Sphynx'.

Today, they are bred in many countries and shown all around the world in various cat associations, shows, and yes, even movies. As we know it today the Sphynx has proven to be a very robust breed with few health and/or genetic problems.

The Cat Fancier Association (CFA) accepted the Sphynx breed for registration and competition in February 1998.
